Andes is an agriculture and biotechnology innovator empowering microbes to help fight climate change.

Approach

Andes engineers beneficial microorganisms for agricultural fields to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. The microorganisms are added to the soil along with agricultural seeds, such as corn and wheat. The microorganisms grow alongside plant roots and accelerate the conversion of atmospheric CO₂ into soil inorganic carbon (carbonate minerals). Rainfall transports this inorganic carbon deeper into the soil and as such, the resulting carbonate minerals can potentially remain stored for very long periods.

The build-up of minerals in agricultural fields has positive effects on soil and plant health. Benefits of increased soil inorganic carbon include improved water drainage, higher nutrient content in the soil, and decreased likelihood of plant diseases.

Andes is dedicated to transparency and rigorous carbon accounting by partnering with Tier 1 carbon standards and verification bodies. Andes has partnered with Gold Standard to release the world’s first CDR methodology based on microbial carbon dioxide mineralization in agricultural fields.
